The Charter for Children
by Dustin Milligan · Published by DC Publishing

About the Book
What if our kids grew up already knowing about their rights to equality and freedom from discrimination? The Charter for Children introduces young readers to the basic principles of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms — using unforgettable, hilarious Canadian icons like Justin BEAVER, Anne of Green TOMATOES, and Alanis MOOSETTE to make complex legal ideas feel wonderfully accessible.
Each story is set in a different Canadian province or territory, addressing a different right or freedom in the Charter. Rich in social vocabulary and alive with Canadian humour, this series empowers children by making them aware of who they are — and the rights they hold.
Why We Love This Book
We love the uniquely Canadian content — celebrities, geography, and history — and how it inspires civic pride and political awareness in the youngest Canadians. Dustin's books are the perfect blend of humour and gravity, using clever analogies to teach kids (and adults!) about the nation's legal protections. And the vocabulary? Rich, challenging, and spelling-bee worthy.
Bonus Extras
- Teacher guide available for digital download
- Colouring pages for young readers
- The Charter song — sing along while you learn!
- Mini Spelling Bee word cards (see below)

About the Author
Dustin Milligan
Dustin Milligan is a native of Tyne Valley, Prince Edward Island. He received a Bachelor of Social Sciences from the University of Ottawa and degrees in Law (LL.B./B.C.L.) from McGill University. He has worked in constitutional advocacy and litigation in Canada, South Africa, and Burma, and was called to the bar of Prince Edward Island in 2011.
The idea for The Charter for Children emerged during law school, when Dustin recognized that the children who benefit most from legal protections are often least aware of them. His love for literature and the law led to a series that teaches children they have rights — and that those rights matter.
