Our Story So Far

From one bee to a nation

The Canada Super Spelling Bee is committed to fostering a love for spelling and learning among students. Our story exemplifies that dedication at every step.

2018

Canada Super Spelling Bee was founded in 2018 after Jaden Zhang competed in the Scripps National Spelling Bee and wanted to bring the same joyous experience to Canadian students.

There was much more to spelling bees than just memorizing words, and he wanted to create a platform that would help students experience a bee community.

2019

The Canada Super Spelling Bee hosts its first competition at Immaculata High School with 48 spellers. Sriram Hathwar, a 2014 Scripps National Spelling Bee co-champion, was the guest pronouncer and Paul Hamrick, a Scripps finalist, was the guest head judge.

The bee was a huge success, with Timothy Riscalas, a grade 8 from Immaculata Catholic High School, being declared champion. The community continued to grow with more students and parents getting involved.

This year also saw many VIP judges and pronouncers, including many of the Scripps National Spelling Bee Octochamps.

2022

The bee community continues to grow, with more students and parents getting involved. Canada Super Spelling Bee prepares to go back in-person for the first time since 2019.

2023

The Canada National Super Spelling Bee is back in person, with hundreds of school spellers working hard to prepare for the competition at the Nepean Sportsplex in Ottawa.

The bee also received national recognition, with the Prime Minister of Canada and Premier of Ontario sending letters of appreciation and congratulations to CSSB and spellers. Additionally, the bee received coverage from Rogers News and CTV News, showcasing the dedication and hard work of the spellers.
