Hello! My name is Ms. Jessica. I graduated from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts (with Honours). At Carleton, I studied English and American Sign Language. Currently, I am completing my Bachelor of Education in the Primary/Junior Division at Nipissing University.

I have worked as a teaching assistant for an American Sign Language class at Carleton University where I had the opportunity to support student language learning and increase my own fluency in the language. I am currently doing my teaching practicum for my Bachelor of Education at an elementary school here in Ottawa. I am working alongside a fabulous associate teacher who is encouraging my development as an educator. Since our class is being delivered remotely this year, I have learned various techniques for delivering lessons through an online format and I am excited to bring these strategies to CSSB classes!

I love language and literacy and am passionate about promoting the same love for language in my students! I am excited to work with the CSSB to support student learning and development.

Mrs. Ntibazonkiza

Avatar

Bonjour! My name is Mrs. Ntibazonkiza and French is my first language.

I grew up in a French speaking country called Burundi and I always loved the French language.

During all my learning experiences, I studied in the French language and I continued to do so when I moved to Ottawa twenty years ago. Upon arrival, I quickly understood the importance of being bilingual in Canada, and took the opportunity to learn the English language as well, which made me bilingual in both official languages. In addition, I obtained my Specialized Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from the University of Ottawa.

My University degree along with my bilingualism allowed me to qualify for Federal Government employment as a bilingual Policy analyst. From the love I have for the French language and considering the demand of bilingualism in the region, I decided to share my knowledge and enthusiasm for the French language with others who are interested to learn the lovely language.

I have 5 years experience teaching the French language at different levels, in person or online, from beginner to advanced levels. I can adapt my teaching style to suit my students’ needs. Although my approach is focused on my student’s requests, I prefer an interactive methodology.

I personally speak French, English, Swahili, Kirundi and Kinyarwanda, and from my own language learning experience, I recognise that learning a foreign language should be both a pleasure and an enjoyable adventure. It is also a great opportunity to share culture, customs and traditions. I do my best to pass it on to my students in an enjoyable and relaxed manner.

I am a patient mother, understanding, good listener, and work hard at personalising my lesson plans to meet my students objectives and pace of learning. My kind personality, along with empathy and flexibility allow me to crease a positive learning environment for all my students, particularly for the youth. I enjoy every moment spent teaching kids that I do not count extra time spent as long as I meet my objective. I do my best to encourage my students’ self-confidence, which enables them to feel linguistically secure enough to make the leap into fluid communication.

Teaching French is a passion and I look forward to share my expertise of the French language with you or your children!

Merci et a bientôt!

My experience includes working with students one on one and in group settings.

It is my goal to ensure that the student and I work together to achieve their desired goals.I believe that education is a collaborative effort. To ensure that students' academic goals are met, it is important that the student and the educator are working towards a common goal.

When I am not teaching, I enjoy singing, playing the piano and spending time outdoors.

My name is Mr. Latremouille. My interest in life is language! As such I am enrolled at the University of Ottawa in a psychology and linguistics double major. I have taught myself Spanish to fluency beyond my native English and French. I was born in Ottawa but have done anything but stay here.

I have visited the United States, China, Mexico, Nicaragua, Panama, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, and China. When I finished high school, I flew down to Costa Rica to take an intensive course and earn my TEFL certificate (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) with a perfect score.

I then taught English and French in San Jose for six months. I then came back to Canada to be a teacher and camp counselor in Canada Super Spelling Bee summer camp! I am now still teaching for them during the year and will return to camp as soon as possible. With my thousands of teaching hours, I am not only fully capable, but very eager to teach my students things they will remember their whole lives.

Hello!

My name is Ms. Stander, and I have been in the teaching and tutoring profession for the past 13 years. I have a degree in Informatics as well as Nursing Science. I started English tutoring for our new medical recruits in the Critical Care Unit, and the love of teaching was born! Eventually, this progressed on to teaching children, which I have been doing full time for the past 4 years.

I have traveled and worked all over the world, and I really enjoy learning about new cultures. I have traveled and worked in 25 countries (and counting!). At the moment I am learning Mandarin, so I do understand the challenges of a new language.

I enjoy running with and around my son, painting, reading, hiking in the mountains, swimming in the ocean, and creating delicious sweet treats in my kitchen.

I do believe that learning can and should be an exciting experience. I always ensure my students have fun with me in the learning process.

Mr. McQuillan

Avatar

My name is Mr. McQuillan. I was born in Red Deer, Alberta, in 1977 and moved to Vancouver Island when I was 12 years old and graduated from Highland Secondary with honors in 1994. As a teenager, I was an avid tennis and basketball player. My mother was an elementary school teacher, and my father was an electrical engineer. I have three sisters and one brother. After graduating from high school, I attended North Island College and took general studies for two years. In 1999, I went to Southeast Asia and backpacked around Cambodia and Thailand.

While I was in Thailand, I met a few Australians who were English teachers in Taipei. At that point, I knew I wanted to move to Taiwan and give teaching a try. In 2000, I took a TESOL course to prepare and then flew to Taipei by myself in July 2001.

When I arrived, I was very fortunate to meet a local Taiwanese English teacher who helped me prepare a song tape to increase my chances of getting a job. After looking for work for a few weeks, I was fortunate to find a reputable school. I used my song tape to help my demo class to kindergarten kids, and the managers at Sunshine American School offered me a job right away. I must say that was one of the most nervous experiences of my life, but it was also quite fun! I was fortunate and grateful because Sunshine was already an established school with an excellent curriculum. I brought a lot of enthusiasm and energy to my classes and developed a good reputation with the managers and the parents.

After six months of working in the kindergarten, my managers offered me block hours to teach elementary school students in the afternoon. While at Sunshine, my managers gave me a lot of autonomy, great support, and I developed my teaching style while also following their well-structured curriculum. I had to prepare lessons in the afternoon school, conduct parent-teacher meetings, prepare students for bi-semester ‘’big exams,” and write student speeches for speech competitions. I learned how to teach grammar to students in a fun and practical way and tried to make my classes as fun and engaging as possible.

After about five years of working at Sunshine, I decided to study Mandarin, so I enrolled in a buxiban (cram school) to learn conversation. Then, I decided to challenge the entry exam to enter NCCU to study Mandarin and business for over three years. I was awarded two scholarships there and decided to learn Chinese while also working part-time in the afternoon at Sunshine.

Studying Mandarin was one of the best things I ever did because it taught me about culture, improved my teaching skills, built connections, and made me more open-minded.

In 2012, I decided to move back to Canada to be closer to my family. Thank you very much for giving me this opportunity to use my experience and passion to help students in Canada achieve their goals.

Miss Gatien

Avatar

Hello! My name is Miss Gatien. I live in the small town of Spencerville (ON) and I am currently enrolled in the Joint-Honours in Psychology and Linguistics program at the University of Ottawa.

I have always had a deep passion for both learning and teaching. Language has always been a strong suit of mine; over the course of my academic career, my curriculum has heavily consisted of English and grammar studies. In highschool, I became a published author through my involvement in a literary workshop offered by Carleton University.

While I was the Recreational Activities Program Coordinator at SLWC summer camp, I was able to walk campers through activities which involved problem-solving and putting their abilities to the test. I learned to remain outgoing and maintain an environment of safety and positivity.

I encourage students to think critically, motivate them to ask questions, and foster the love of learning.

Hello! My name is Ms. Chantal, and I'm very pleased to be able to work with students from CSSB, and help them achieve their goals. I have a bachelor's degree in linguistics, more specifically in neurolinguistics, from Université de Montréal, and I am currently a master's student in linguistics at Université de Montréal. I have been a research assistant since my undergraduate years. In fact, I am interested in speech impediments and the neurological processes underlying them, and I mainly work with children who stutter in my research.

As a born and bred Montréaler, I grew up trilingual, and I have always been passionate about working with kids, which started with joining the Royal Canadian Air Cadet program in my teens., where I learned many life skills. Since aging out of the program, I returned as an officer, and it's been my pleasure to have been able to give back to the program by teaching our future leaders in various skills, such as aviation, leadership and public speaking. I have 4 years of tutoring and teaching children whose second languages are English or French as well.

I strive to make my classes as dynamic and positive as possible, while encouraging a critical thinking environment. I look forward to helping students reach their full potential!
